Minecraft quickly changing characters?

In minecraft there's the option in chat or in books that you can use §k (I think) to quickly write changing characters. I only tried it yesterday in a book, it also worked, but now it somehow doesn't work anymore or I'm no longer sure what to type in to get it… Can someone help me?
