Which minecraft version do I need to play multiplayer e.g. Bedwars or masterbuilders?

Most servers run on 1.8.8 for this as far as I know.
But in principle there's a suitable server for almost every version above 1.7.10.

It's not about the version, but the edition.

Minecraft now offers two editions: The Java Edition and the Bedrock Edition.

Java is the classic game that has been developed since 2010.
Bedrock is the cross-playing platform for computers, mobile phones and game consoles.

However, many multiplayer servers use the Java Edition and can therefore only be accessed by Java players.
For example, if you try to join hypixel on your mobile phone, it will fail.
