You can play with other people in the multiplayer area.
You can buy / rent a server for this
or you run a server on your pc and connect to your friend via hamachi.

Once you've bought Minecraft, you don't have to pay extra money. In the Pocket Edition you need an X Box live account to play online. But you can create that for free.
