So, the following scenario:
My faithful GTX 980 Ti has passed away last week with a crash of mine so I'm looking for (now) a worthy successor.
I have 500 euro available and would like to buy either a 1080 Ti or 2070, both used because cheaper. Costs about the same amount.
The problem (besides the dead 980 Ti) is now that I absolutely can't decide. The 1080 Ti is a few FPS faster and because of the 11 GB of RAM may also be a little future-proof than the RTX. Of course, this has RT (which in turn should increase the longevity of the 2070 over the 1080 Ti) and the better efficiency they speak for. The slightly longer driver support for the 2070 is rather negligible, because I did not intend to have the card - no matter which one - in the system so long that it makes a difference.
The following things would be worth mentioning:
-I would like to play as liquid as possible on WQHD and partly also 4K (Everything from Minecraft to AAA)
-Ray Tracing irritates me as a nerd, of course, but I doubt that I will bring a first-gen RTX so much if someday first a wider mass of games supports the feature (because of then lack of power)
-I still have an i5 6500 with 8GB of RAM, but it will be upgraded to something up-to-date as soon as possible (should happen next, but my GPU did not want to go through it)
So I'm looking forward to your (at best justified) suggestions, which card should it be now.
If you then get a gtx 1080 ti for 300 euro, which is already 26 months old and then goes hopps, what's in it for you? Buy the RTX 2070 Super for ~ 550 euro, which is 10-15% faster than the gtx 1080 ti.
That's true, of course. Good point.
500 euro is really my absolute limit.
Would you still take the 2070 (without super) instead of the 1080 Ti?
The GTX 1080ti you will hardly get new for 500 euro, because if so, then take the GTX. Otherwise grab the RTX 2070.
Well, as you have already determined, the 1080ti purely in terms of performance is a little better… 15% about… Therefore, I would renounce to RT because it is currently still bauble (my opinion) → especially in such resolutions and future AAA titles… This will certainly be the topic of the next few years what you can wait for a few more generations until the whole thing has become commercial and usable:-)
I would wait and get a RX 5700XT as soon as models with axial fans come on the market.
Even without custom models, the z.Z. Only 420 euro and can compete with the 1080ti.
