Do I need my own IP address for a Minecraft server?

I want to play Minecraft with a friend for two, which is why we want to rent a server at zap-hosting. Now I can choose whether I want to have my own IP address or not. Having your own IP address costs extra and now I'm wondering what's the difference or whether I can play with my girlfriend as normal without my own IP address. The info box only says that with your own IP address you have greater protection against DDos attacks and that the IP address will be kept when you switch between games. Nothing that I think is relevant, but wanted to ask again if there's anything else.

But with a second IP address the DDOS protection is automatically better. That is not now that ZAP gives them better protection, that is the IP addresses.

IP addresses don't do it by themselves, people have to install software and configure it for IP. Therefore I see it as a rip off, because with any other provider this is a matter of course for every IP.
