Improve Aternos Minecraft server performance?

I'm doing a Minecraft project with 12 friends. In the beginning everything went smoothly, but now it's completely lagged. You can hardly even tear down a tree and not even 500mb are used. How can you improve performance?

With 12 players, more than 500mb will definitely be used.

You can possibly Try different anti lag plugins from Aternos if they help is another question. You can also create your own server which then runs on your PC, whether this is better depends on your PC.
