I created a Minecraft survival world in the lowlands and I don't know how to light the portal because I can't find any gravel. Does anyone know if that's possible?
You could find gravel in villages
So actually you won't find gravel in a flat world. You would have to cheat to set that on fire.
Pfff… Well you could look for a village, hopefully get 3 irons and take the lava from the smithy. Then you put wood next to the portal, light it with the lava and wait until the fire jumps over the portal.

As long as Villages are out or structures are out
You can also place wood on the portal - not in the portal, but next to it. And not next to the obsidian blocks, but where the portal is supposed to be. Then you light the wood with lava, but the lava must not flow into the portal.
Go to a village and get lava. Or (very tedious) you wait until a lightning strikes the portal
