To what extent do you have to convince your parents to do this? Learn basic Java, then tackle a plug-in.

What do you convince for? Make it easy. Doesn't cost anything. Download an editor like Eclipse (free) and work in e.g. Java pure.

Why convince them? Doesn't cost anything, just try it out. The necessary programs are all free and there are tutorials in abundance on Youtube
