So the best and most effective way to grow wheat is from seeds that then become wheat. You can then use it to craft bread.
Potato! You can then bake them and you also get quite a few when you harvest and if you have a large field, you actually never have to worry about your hunger again.
Carrots, are most effective at both no additional cost and (in theory) at an additional cost. When growing carrots, including new growing costs, you get an average of 5.13 half hunger bars. For potatoes this is only 1.71 and wheat only 1.65.
On average, you get 2.71 new ones when you grow carrots and potatoes, and always 1 when you grow wheat, while you don't have to grow new crops for wheat, but you need 3 to craft bread which fill up 5 half hunger bars, resulting in 0.3 × 5 = 1.65 . Potatoes fill only 1 hunger bar without additional costs, which results in 1 × 1.71 = 1.71 minus new cultivation costs. Carrots fill 3 half hunger bars, minus new cultivation costs you have 3 × 1.71 = 5.13.
Additional costs increase the value for potatoes to 8.55 and for carrots to 10.26. In that case, without a corresponding gold farm, it would be more profitable to grow potatoes.
So if you have gold, then gold carrots. Otherwise, baked potatoes are the easiest.
