I would like to get a home server to store various media (movies / photos / etc) and to run a gaming server. This would run for the game Minecraft (Spigot) and a maximum of 10-20 slots (small server among friends). In addition, a Minecraft Forge server, which, however, will not run at the same time. As an operating system, I would use Ubuntu and install the Minecraft Server, SAMBA file share, the Universal Media Server, and an automatic shutdown scheduler at night. Since I do not have much experience with it yet, I would also install Ubuntu Desktop to manage everything remotely.
It is often recommended to simply buy a cheap used server on eBay as a home server. Which one would you recommend. It does not necessarily have to be a high-end server now, just for home use. Should not consume too much power.
I would just put together a PC on which you can run this.
Hi
I want to get a home server,
Do you pay for the power consumption yourself or should that be borne by the parents?
Should the server only be operated in-house or also via WAN?
How much money do you want and can you spend on it?
to store there various media (movies / photos / etc) and operate a gaming server.
For this, the server must then schonmal have a lot of hard disk space and if it should be a RAID again twice as much. RAM can never be had enough with Java applications anyway.
As an operating system, I would use Ubuntu
Can you do it? Mine would not be mine.
and install a scheduler to automatically shut down at night.
A server that does not run permanently does not make much sense in my opinion. Uptime is everything with my servers and that is partly years in a row.

Using a desktop on the server is the most naive thing you can do. Learn the administration correctly or leave it alone.

If you do not want to run the hardware anyway around the clock you can also use a "normal" desktop PC and do not need to buy more expensive hardware for it.
Linux Hase
I'm experimenting with an old PC on my computer to test if I can handle it at all. Would be synonymous unnecessary to buy an expensive server that I will never use, because I do not get the right set up.
Nice that at least one feedback comes after a week ;-)
